Lake Travis Cavs win sixth championship in historic season
The Lake Travis High School Cavaliers brought home an early Christmas present for the entire community, when they won the first Class 6A football title in the school’s history.
Playing at AT&T Stadium in Dallas on the weekend before Christmas, the Cavs topped The Woodlands by an impressive score of 41-13.
The victory over a previously unbeaten opponent capped a historic season for the Cavs, where they dominated the playoffs so strongly that the hashtag #LTakeover2016 became a social media phenomenon.
Sportswriter Rick Canty nicely summed up the Cavs’ victorious season and glorious finale in the Austin American-Statesman:
“Led by quarterback Charlie Brewer and a jarring defense, the machine-like Cavaliers dominated the (Woodlands) Highlanders in every phase of the game, completing their 2016 season with 15 straight victories. They also claimed their sixth UIL football championship, adding to the state-record five straight Class 4A titles they won from 2007-11.”
An Associated Press article noted that quarterback Charlie Brewer passed for 361 yards and four touchdowns, showing why he was recently named the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Player of the Year. He follows in the proud family tradition of his older brother, Michael, who won two titles at Lake Travis, and his grandfather, Charlie Brewer, who led Lubbock High School to the 1951 title.
At Sweetwater, we congratulate the Cavs and all who had a part in their victory, from the coaches and parents, to the cheerleaders and the strongly supportive community members who came out the day before the big game to give them a hearty Hill Country sendoff.
Now, it’s easier than ever to see why the Cavs and all of the Lake Travis ISD schools serving Sweetwater are such a huge part of life here. #GoCavs – forever!
