Sweetwater Blog Nov 2023 Bond Update

13 November . 2023

These major athletics upgrades are coming to Lake Travis High and Middle Schools

Sweetwater is proud to be part of the highly regarded Lake Travis Independent School District, ranked as the No. 2 Best School District in Travis County by Niche.

With overwhelming voter approval of its $143 million bond package on November 7, LTISD’s reputation for athletic excellence will get a major boost, with new athletic facilities and upgrades planned throughout the district.

Lake Travis High School and Lake Travis Middle School, both of which serve Sweetwater, are major beneficiaries of the bond approval. Here’s how the package will affect these schools, according to information provided by the district.

Lake Travis High School

The Lake Travis Cavaliers will get new additions, upgrades and renovations for many of their athletic facilities, thanks to the bond issue.

One of the major projects will be renovations to Cavalier Stadium, increasing the permanent seating capacity from 7,400 to 12,000. The stadium will also get new radio and television facilities, a film deck, scoreboard operations rooms and new multipurpose turf fields.

New outdoor golf amenities will include hitting bays, a putting and chipping green and sand bunker.

The baseball stadium will get new artificial turf, a concession stand renovation, and replacement of press box with a film deck.

The softball stadium will get new artificial turf, and the track stadium will get new turf, seating and fencing.

Renovations and additions to the women's field house will include locker rooms, restrooms, showers, coaches offices, team room, athletics office and meeting rooms.

Lake Travis Middle School

Lake Travis Middle School, along with all LTISD middle schools, will get new athletic turf and track surfaces.

The bond package also provides funding for athletics facilities at the district’s second high school, opening in 2027.

LTISD also provided these facts about the 2023 bond package and district tax rate:

  • As compared to the 2022-2023 school year, LTISD has lowered its tax rate for the 2023-2024 school year by 13.8 cents per $100 valuation, from $1.2121 to $1.0741. This marks the lowest tax rate in the district since LTISD was established in 1981.
  • Every dollar raised from a bond program stays in Lake Travis ISD.
  • Due to continued district growth, Lake Travis ISD can use the existing tax rate to fund these projects. Taxpayers will see no increase in the school district tax rate as a result of this bond, nor will it lessen the effects of the taxpayer relief approved in the recently concluded 88th Texas Legislature.
  • The proposed projects in Bond 2023 are comparable in size, scope, and amenities to similar facilities provided by neighboring districts to their students. The district’s goal is to provide equitable facilities for students at all campuses while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
  • LTISD homeowners receive an additional 20 percent reduction in appraised value through school board-approved Local Optional Homestead Exemption.
