Top 10 things to do in Lakeway

Lakeway is one of the most popular resort destinations in Texas, and it’s only a few miles from Sweetwater. Here’s our list of the Top 10 things to do in Lakeway, whether you’re interested in a relaxing day trip or a mini-vacation that’s close to home.

Lakeway City Park. Located along scenic Lake Travis, Lakeway City Park offers swimming, fishing and non-motorized boating on the water. Land lovers can enjoy hiking, washers, volleyball, basketball, horseshoes and other sports. There’s also a tranquil butterfly garden, a dog park, and playscapes for toddlers and older kids.

Lakeway Resort & Spa. Enjoy a nearby resort that feels a million miles away from stress at Lakeway Resort & Spa. Perched above the shimmering waters of Lake Travis, this Texas Hill Country resort provides a variety of sports and recreational amenities for the entire family. It offers a full-service spa, three large swimming pools, a whirlpool, a swim-up bar, and a waterslide that's popular with kids. The Lakeway experience also includes cocktails, a restaurant with panoramic lake views, a state-of-the-art fitness center and a marina.

Austin Salt Cave. The Hill Country is famous for its natural caverns, and Lakeway also has the Austin Salt Cave, where you can relax amid 11 tons of pink Himalyan sea salt, which recreates the climate of a real salt cave. Popular in Europe since the 1960s, it’s a treatment said to have healing properties for the body and skin.

Hamilton greenbelts. Lakeway’s Hamilton Greenbelts are a first-class network of developed and primitive trails that meander along scenic Hurst and Yaupon creeks. They are beautiful destinations for family outings, walks, jogs and bike rides. Lovingly maintained by volunteers, the intimate Chapel of the Four Seasons is a popular place for weddings and other events for groups of 25 people or less.

Outdoor movies. With its scenic surroundings and great Hill Country weather, Lakeway has two ways to enjoy movies al fresco. You can watch Movies in the Park on several Friday nights throughout the summer at Lakeway City Park. Lakeway Swim Center has Dive-In Movies on several Friday nights in summer.

Zipline thrills. Not technically in Lakeway, but very close, Lake Travis Zipline Adventures offers 5 zipline experiences for people of all ages, including the longest and fastest zipline in Texas. You can also picnic, swim, play games or relax in a hammock on their private beach.

Eat local, early. Cafe Lago Coffeehouse is the go-to place for breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch for Lakeway locals. Their daily specials include a variety of soups, quiche and deli salads. Start your day with a latte, cappuccino, mocha or drip coffee alongside a fresh baked pastry or breakfast taco.

Eat local, later. Lakeway has no shortage of delicious restaurants, whether you want a luxurious dining experience or a classic Texas roadhouse. For this category, we’ll give a shout out to Santa Catarina, TripAdvisor’s No. 1 rated restaurants among the 41 eateries it lists in Lakeway. A Certificate of Excellence winner from 2015 to 2018, Santa Caterina serves  Mexican and Latin food, with an accent on seafood, and plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choices available.

Dam good time. Mansfield Dam Park offers beautiful views of Lake Travis where visitors can picnic, swim in a secluded cove, fish and set sail from the largest public boat ramp on Lake Travis. An extensive scuba diving park has four underwater dive platforms at various lake levels. An underwater trail and compass course connects dive attractions such as sunken boats, historic dam construction materials, and geological points of interest. On land, there’s a climbing boulder, campsites, chess tables, multiuse trails, barbecue grills and much more.

Holiday fun. Lakeway is appealing throughout the year, but the holidays are a very special time to visit, when the Trail of Lights delights visitors of all ages with thousands of twinkling lights, amusing tableaus and delightful seasonal music. Best of all, it’s free!
