The Nelson family finds higher ground in Sweetwater

One of the newest families in Sweetwater, the Nelsons relocated to Austin after Hurricane Harvey struck Houston in 2017. They’ve found the higher ground they were looking for, along with a neighborly lifestyle and highly regarded Lake Travis ISD schools for their two young children.

  • Where are you from originally?

We started our family in California, then we moved to Bellaire, a small city surrounded by Houston. We moved to Sweetwater just a year ago.

  • How did you come to live at Sweetwater?

After surviving Hurricane Harvey, we decided it was time to get to higher ground. Both Suzi and Dean have flexible work schedules, so there was no need to be physically located in Houston any longer. We were attracted by the amazing schools run by the Lake Travis Independent School District, the beautiful landscape and natural setting, as well as the amenities offered by Sweetwater.

  • Tell us about your family.

Dean is semi-retired at the moment. Suzi is a business development manager for Agera Energy. Nat is a rising 8th grader who loves theater and art. She is also an avid reader. Nicholas is a rising 6th grader who loves Rubik’s cubes, chess and outdoor activities.

  • What are your favorite things about the community?

We have been very fortunate to meet and become friends with amazing neighbors, both in our neighborhood and within the overall community. The amenities are great, and the community activities are lots of fun. We try to attend as many as we can so we can meet more friends.

  • What surprised you about living here?

We were surprised by how much it really feels like country living, both within Sweetwater and in the surrounding Hill Country.

  • Can you share something very few people know about you?

Dean played Nebraska football under coach Tom Osborne. Suzi is a fifth generation Texan. At the age of 50, she still has three grandparents living here in this great state. The kids still have a lot of life to live before they have anything interesting to share, ha ha.
