Austin named top Texas city to retire in
Austin ranks No. 4 in the nation and No. 1 in Texas as a city to retire in, according to the Best Places to Retire in 2019 list from U.S. News & World Report.
To compile the list, U.S. News analyzed metrics from the 100 largest metropolitan regions in the United States, looking at data for housing affordability, happiness, desirability, retiree taxes, the job market and access to quality health care.
“This state capital city is famous for its live music and carefully cultivated quirky culture,” U.S. News writes. “The area has a diverse economy, and is a hub for tech jobs, with major employers including Apple, Dell, ISM and Samsung.”
Quality healthcare is important to retirees, and U.S. News lists Seton Medical Center Austin and St. David’s Medical Center as among the major healthcare providers for the area.
For continuing education, seniors age 65 and older can take up to six credit hours of course with free tuition at Austin’s world-class campus, the University of Texas at Austin.
As for housing, U.S. News lists Austin’s median housing price for retirees at $283,500, a median that “is considerably more affordable than home prices in coastal cities with similar amenities.”
Other Texas cities making the list San Antonio (8), Dallas-Fort Worth (9) and El Paso (11).
