Sweetwater shows off design trends expected to grow in 2018

From colorful kitchens and vintage style lighting, to millwork feature walls and patterned tile backsplashes, the interior design experts at Houzz have identified 22 interior design trends expected to take hold in 2018.

We found many of these trends already on view in the beautifully decorated model homes at Sweetwater. It’s worth taking a look, whether you’re wanting to give your existing home some resale sizzle, or you’re already planning on incorporating the newest design trends into your new home.

Here are seven of the most interesting trending design ideas you can see at Sweetwater – one for each of our model homes.

More color in kitchens. Houzz says: White kitchens are so popular they aren’t going away, but expect to see a rise in kitchen color, especially in neutrals like gray and blue, and in warm wood tones instead of painted cabinets. We say: see how Coventry blends classic white with rich woods, subtle granite hues and detailed tile backsplashes in the kitchen of its Sweetwater model home.

Rich colors. The Houzz take: Rich colors, especially for sofas, can add a sense of passion. Our take: the vivid blues throughout Westin's Sweetwater model home pull no punches when it comes to rich colors.

Millwork feature walls and detailing. Houzz: Shiplap, millwork panels and reclaimed wood boards have been around for a while now; expect to see this trend continue for some time. Sweetwater:

The dining room feature wall in Chesmar’s Ryder model home is a real showstopper. Ditto for the accent walls in the study and Emma’s bedroom. You can also see several feature walls – and a feature ceiling – in Chesmar’s Alexis model home in Sweetwater.

Vintage lighting. Houzz says: There’s a huge focus on lighting right now. Pros are reporting more interest in vintage-style fixtures. We say: See vintage style lighting fixtures in the kitchen, dining room and other rooms of River Oaks Home’ Antigua model home in Sweetwater.

Casual and calm modern bedrooms. Houzz’s forecast: You can’t decorate your way to a good night’s sleep. A calm, relaxing bedroom is ideal for a restful night. At Sweetwater: see how Perry uses soothing neutrals to make the owner’s suite of its Design 3435S model home a tranquil oasis.

Mixing metals, texture and sheen. Houzz: People are paying more attention to sheen and texture, including metallic elements. Sweetwater: see the metallic accents in Coventry's model.

Defining kitchens in open floor plans. The Houzz take: open floor plans still dominate, but many homeowners are preferring a delineation of space, with a half wall of cabinetry or a different color or material palette, to visually define the kitchen. Our take: Perry’s Design 1950W model home in Sweetwater creates a perfect balance of openness and defined space between the kitchen and living areas.
