Lake Travis loves our Cavs as much as Austin loves the Longhorns
How much do Sweetwater and other Lake Travis communities love our Lake Travis High School Cavaliers? Think about how passionate Austin is about the University of Texas Longhorns, and you’ll get the idea.
As much or more than any pro sports team, the Longhorns give Austin a distinct sense of place, with seas of burnt orange t-shirts to be seen at any game or gathering. Throughout football season, the top of the iconic UT Tower lights up in orange to celebrate Longhorn victories.
It’s a lot like that up in the Cavalier country that’s home to Sweetwater, where it seems like every other car sorts a #GoCavs sticker. The Lake Travis colors of red, black and silver are as widespread as burnt orange, and the Cavaliers mascot is as beloved as Bevo.
Love for the Cavaliers is based on a long string of accomplishments, as well as community pride.
The Cavs won six consecutive state championships between 2007 and 2016, becoming the only Texas high school football team to accomplish this feat. Team pride reached a fever pitch when the Cavs set this record in late 2016, capping a season of 15 consecutive victories. A new hashtag – #LTakeover2016 – went viral, and huge crowds turned out for victory celebrations at the Hill Country Galleria and other places.
Founded in 1981, Lake Travis High School is a full century younger than UT, which began in 1881. But when it comes to community pride and traditions, love for the Cavs runs every bit as deep. (For the record, the Longhorns are as just as popular around Lake Travis!)
Other athletic programs at Lake Travis High School include rugby, basketball, swimming, golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball.
