Seed balls are a fun and easy way to sow spring wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country. Fall is a perfect time for this kid-friendly craft.

07 November . 2017

Sweetwater residents make Seed Balls for spring wildflowers. Here’s how you can too.

This time of year, we all get excited about pumpkin spice, brilliant foliage and other signs of autumn. But did you know that right now is also the perfect time to plant seeds for spring wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country?

As our friends at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center explain, seeds need a chilling period to break their dormancy and wear down their hard coatings before they can germinate in warmer, wetter spring weather.

At Sweetwater, residents of all ages will be gathering at the Sweetwater Club in mid November to make Wildflower Seed Balls and spread them throughout the community’s wildflower areas.

Part of Sweetwater’s ongoing partnership with Families in Nature, this activity is not only fun and educational; it also helps make sure that the flowers will be in peak bloom next spring for the annual Sweetwater Wildflower Festival.

Here’s how to make your own seed balls, and the Wildflower Center has these tips for growing wildflowers in Central Texas.

Learn more about how Sweetwater residents enjoy year ‘round activities at the Sweetwater Club and other amenities, and see a gallery of our beautiful wildflower photos.
